Free checklist, about two minutes

Could someone else run your business tomorrow?

Twelve plain questions about the things only you tend to know. You don't get a score. You get the list of what isn't written down yet, and where each one would go.

Nothing you tick is sent anywhere or kept. Close the page and it's gone.

The twelve questions

Answer for the business as it is today, not as you mean it to be.

  1. 1.If your phone went in the harbour tonight, would someone else know where the reset codes for your email, bank and accounting software go?
  2. 2.Is the domain name and the website hosting in the business's name, with the renewal date written down?
  3. 3.Does anyone else know whose name the alarm monitoring, the mobile accounts and the fuel cards are in?
  4. 4.Is every licence the business trades on written down, with whose name it is in and when it expires?
  5. 5.Would someone else know when public liability and the vehicle policies renew, and who your insurance broker is?
  6. 6.Is every vehicle and machine listed with its rego or serial number, and whether it is owned outright or on finance?
  7. 7.Are the next service and inspection dates written somewhere other than your head?
  8. 8.Is the date the lease option has to be exercised by written down where someone else would see it?
  9. 9.For each person, is it written down what only they can do, and who else could do it?
  10. 10.Are tickets and licences your people hold (white cards, high risk work licences) recorded with their expiry dates?
  11. 11.Could someone follow one whole job, from the enquiry to the invoice, from what is written down?
  12. 12.Does someone else know where the books live, who the accountant is and how to reach them?

What isn't written down yet

Your list appears here as you answer. "Not sure" counts as not written down, because on the day it's needed it might as well not be.

Why there's no score

A score tells you how you compare with a number somebody else chose. A list tells you what to do on Monday.

Most owners start with Systems and Logins, because it is the one where the answer lives on one person's phone.
